  • Meet the challenges with equanimity. How can we use the challenges in life in a way that creates balance? We know that many things on this earth go different rhythms and more and more people do not know how to cope with the faster moving world. For thousands of years, people in China used Qi Gong to practice coping with daily challenges in our life. Qi Gong has many facets and gains more and more attention in the public. The foundation of Qi Gong practice is mindfulness and everyone can learn it.

  • Rejuvenation Biotechnology: Why Age Will No Longer Mean Aging

  • People are living longer than they used to – no longer because of reductions in child mortality, but because we are postponing the ill-health of old age. But you’ve seen nothing yet: regenerative medicine and other new biomedical technologies will eventually be so comprehensive that people will stay truly youthful, however long they live - meaning they may mostly live very long indeed.

  • Artificial Intelligence is THE technological megatrend of the 21st century. AI will develop far beyond the level of recent process controlling systems and will make computer mouses, keyboards, apps, maybe even smartphones as such obsolete. We won’t have to deal with technologically insufficient user interfaces anymore because technology will seamlessly and ergonomically blend in into our daily lives. Products will dissolve into services and AI is going to be an individual and effective comprehensive support for everyone.

  • Abstractions In Concrete

  • An audio/video-installation by Berlin-based artists Phil Max Schöll and Lukas Taido, curated by Hendrik Wendler. The \"Sound Chamber\" between studios 1 and 2, is a hidden world - built to function as an acoustic barrier, then vanishing into oblivion during the times of the former GDR and subsequently. Developed exlusively for the TOA, multichannel audio and numerous projectors will turn it into an abstract temple of immersive acoustic manipulations and architectural shiftings, artistically regrouping the perception of the visitor. Visual artist Phil Max Schöll has created large outdoor projection mappings as well as a wide diversity of video and projection artworks. Audio-artist and musician Lukas Taido creates his „soundsculptures“ around the globe, often using innovative multichannel and 3D-audio technologies. Hendrik Wendler organizes and curates the renown annual Genius Loci Weimar video mapping competition.

  • Fitness equipment that makes music in response to user movements have a greater beneficial effect on mood than passive listening to music during sport. Working out and making music at the same time – scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig retrofitted conventional fitness machines to produce music during a workout. Not only do these \"jymmin\" machines reduce physical exertion during exercise. The researchers have now proven that they also have a mood-enhancing effect: After strength training with musical feedback, a person\'s mood improves significantly. It appears that hormones are responsible for this beneficial effect on mood. Try it out yourself and get in the best TOA mood there can be!

  • Demystifying The Dark Web

  • The Dark Web can be a very dangerous place, yet in essence it is a social network just like any other. The threat actors are human and act as they would in any social network. Threat actors may change their names hiding behind the anonymity of the Dark Web, but they don\'t necessarily change how they interact. So how can we demystify it through automated data monitoring, collection and intelligence production?

  • Social Technology for a Regenerative Society

  • New social technologies now link humanity together as never before. At the same time, we confront an ecological crisis with the possibility of runaway climate change and a tremendous loss of biodiversity that threatens our future as a species. In theory, social tools could be used to engineer a rapid transition to a more sustainable society - they could be used to build an infrastructure for democratic decision-making, retrain people in bioremediation practices, and lead to efficient resource sharing. At the moment, the emancipatory potential of these social tools is obstructed by a global financial system which benefits corporations and private wealth-holders over social and ecological causes. How can we develop a new set of tools that confront the threats caused by industrial society and its impacts on the biosphere?

  • In the on-demand economy, large transactions are made within minutes or seconds of consumption. One must not only be able to immediately present inventory that is relevant and then sell it, but also stop transactions immediately if they are suspicious. All of this is made possible through sophisticated machine learning acting on data in real-time. HotelTonight, the leading mobile app for last-minute hotel bookings, has pioneered a variety of AI solutions that are providing its hotel partners a “crystal ball” to gauge demand, better price and more effectively move last-minute inventory. Its machine learning tools for hotels are providing pinpoint accuracy for hotels to drive incremental revenue down to the very last moment.

  • What are the barriers to success in the African agricultural ecosystem, and how can we effectively implement technology to bring about an increase in efficiency, and a change in approach? The African Continent lags behind when it comes to agricultural innovation. Much of this can be attributed to a lack of the financial resources needed to scale and become efficient. However, a lack of money and resources isn’t the only problem. • In this session, we’ll be looking at the differences between creating sounds for a linear medium like movies or audio plays and a nonlinear medium like video games. The sound design in a game should be highly adaptive to the players behaviour to give them an intensive and immersive gameplay feeling. We will also be examining the techniques provided by a middleware like fmod Studio, not only to create event-based ingame sound design but also adaptive game music which responds to the states of a game always depending on the players interactions. • David Mikkelson founded the site now known as snopes.com back in 1994 as a creative outgrowth of his wide-ranging interests in a variety of subjects (particularly folklore) and his professional expertise in the computer industry. Handling everything from researching and writing articles about urban legends to managing the site’s technical infrastructure, David saw snopes.com (which antedated the development of automated search engines) quickly become the go-to place for Internet users to query about anything questionable they encountered online, establishing it as the oldest and best known online fact-checking outlet operating today. In additional to his 20+ years experience researching and writing about the facts behind a multitude of topics, David’s educational background includes a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Texas (San Antonio) and about a zillion course hours of post-graduate classes.

  • Why the healthcare market is not a real market

  • Have you ever wondered why typical characteristics of a free market are lacking in healthcare? While in many other parts of life, digitalization has brought even more transparency, choice and immediacy to its consumer base, healthcare is far behind. The supposedly main consumer of healthcare, the patient, often comes last in the many talks among decision makers in politics, among insurers, providers and pharma companies. What does the patient really want? - is hardly a question one will ever hear.

  • Pictures of Lost Lives: Cellphone Photography of Syrian Refugees in Jordan and Lebanon

  • There are over four billion cellphones currently in use, and of these many contribute to the more than one trillion photographs captured every year. Pictures of sunsets, food, loved ones, and holidays. In the context of modern warfare, cellphones are used for communication, coordination, and coercion. Images are used to document and to enforce government action. But on an individual level, they are still used to maintain a connection to home and to a culture under threat. Syrian refugees living in unsettled conditions in Jordan and Lebanon carry pictures of their past lives, of family members lost, of streets in ruins. With their future uncertain, these pictures maintain a cultural grounding, despite attempts at censorship by the security forces of their host countries. What function do these pictures have, from a personal, cultural, or security perspective? How does technology affect the refugee experience?
