When does TOA19 take place?

Tuesday, July 2nd through Friday, July 5th, 2019

What is the main venue?

Funkhaus Berlin, located at Nalepastraße 18, 12459 Berlin

Does the event take place there all 4 days?

Nope, just on the second and the third day (July 3rd and 4th). There are Satellite events that take place Tuesday, July 2nd through Friday, July 5th, 2019.

What are Satellite events? And where do they take place?

Satellite events are workshops, talks, and various other formats in which the Berlin tech community is able to curate their own programming during the week of TOA. The events occur all over the city of Berlin and can be attended by TOA pass holders. Additionally, the programming can also be streamed, increasing the accessibility to the knowledge being shared- a big win!

What does being a volunteer entail?

As a volunteer, you will be a representative of TOA to the speakers, sponsors, influencers and general ticket holders that are in attendance. There are a variety of ways you can contribute, from production assistance to helping with registration. Just let us know what your preferences are, and we can work with you to find the best way for you to contribute.

Here’s a short description of the different roles, so you can find the perfect match:

Speakers Service: Our speakers are super important to the festival as the whole conference is built around them and their contribution, and it’ll be your responsibility to assist them and make sure they have everything they need. You’ll also track down speakers if they go missing, so you can tell your friends you were a private investigator if you like.

Media Lounge: Some of our speakers will be giving interviews after their talks, so it’s your job to escort them to the interview booth. People will be dying to ask a few questions off-stage so make sure the person in your charge doesn’t get swamped and makes it to their scheduled interview on time.

Information &Hospitality: You’re the touchpoint of the festival. The omniscient being. You provide directions to stages and toilets alike, hand out flyers, and answer general questions about the program.

Registration & Welcome: You will be the smiling face welcoming all of our attendees to the festival. If you’re a personable sort of guy or gal who wants everyone to have a great start to the festival, then registration is for you.

EventConstruction: We’d need your help setting up and taking down the sets and rigs - so you’d be here before the festival starts, and after the festival ends. What this means is you get to enjoy most of TOA unfettered. A thank you for giving up a lot of time with us.

Ground Maintenance: You’ll be manning the cloakroom and occasionally going around picking up rubbish - we understand it isn’t glamorous, but it’s got to be done. It’s pretty easy and a fairly low effort way of getting a free ticket to TOA. Think about it!

Stage Support: If you’ve got some knowledge of tech, and wanna see what goes on behind the curtain then being a stagehand would suit you. You would be part of the team that prepares the stage for speakers and assisting in making sure everything goes to plan. German is preferred as it will make everything a lot easier for the production team.

Satellite Event Support: TOA’s satellite events turn Berlin into an interactive hub of tech, music, and art. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to welcome people to the events and check them in. You’re our ambassador at these events - make us proud!

and much more.... ;)

How often do I need to volunteer to receive a pass for the festival?

To receive a pass for the festival, you must volunteer 2 shifts (roughly 6 hours each). However you’re more than welcome to do more, and many of our volunteers choose to do this!

What can I do when I’m not volunteering?

When you’re not volunteering, you’re free to explore all of the talks, workshops and networking events that TOA has to offer. We of course ask that you’re respectful of all attendees, especially while you’re wearing your volunteer t-shirt.

Can I just show up on the day of and be ready?

Short answer, No. While we’re not looking for you to have excessive amounts of work beforehand, there will be some short briefing materials prior to the festival that you will be asked to look over. We’re also going to have some meetups prior, giving our volunteers an opportunity to mingle and network beforehand.

My friends want to volunteer. Can we do the same shifts so we’re all together?

We understand how much more fun you can have when you’re able to have the experience with friends, that being said, there is no guarantee that you can do all your shifts at the same post and the same time as your friends. What we suggest is indicating the time and locations you are looking to work, and if they align - we’ll do our very best to make it happen. Since we have a lot of responsibilities that need to be fulfilled, our first priority is adequately staffing the areas that need help. But also, TOA is a great way to meet new people too!

I am looking to get more involved with TOA overall and would like more responsibility. Is there anything else I can do?

Yes! We are actually looking for volunteers to step up as a team leads. If you’re interested in helping, please indicate that to us on the Volunteer application. If you have additional questions, you can send an email to alisha@toaberlin.com, but please take into consideration that many of your questions will be answered automatically through updates and briefings as the event moves closer … :)

Is there a dress code at TOA?

You don’t need to dress up, wear something casual that you feel comfortable in and of course your TOA T-shirt! Comfortable shoes are always a plus. And it’s Berlin - so we might have some bipolar weather (even in summer). It’s best to be prepared for it any type of weather.

How do I get to the main venue?

There are a few ways to get to Funkhaus Berlin. You can find directions on how to get there, click HERE for directions. However, the most popular choices are:

  • Public transport (BVG) We recommend taking Tram 21. There is a BVG app & website available that lets you look up connections and times beforehand.
  • Car
  • Bike

I’m coming by bike. Can I bring it inside the festival area?

Unfortunately not, but you can lock it up outside.

Okay, sounds great. What’s next?

Head to the application page and submit your request to be a volunteer! We will then reach out to you, and make sure to provide you with all the information you’ll need to be fully prepared for your shifts. In addition, we’ll keep you posted about meetups and opportunities to get more involved with TOA before and after the festival.
